Coronavirus Emergency Grant Fund Overview

Ten Organizations Serving on the Front Line of the

Coronavirus Crisis to Receive $157,000 in Grants

The WCMA Grant Committee, chaired by Valerie Singer, selected ten non-profits that will receive $157,000 in coronavirus emergency grants. At this time, the tragically high unemployment numbers have resulted in a staggering increase in demand for food, followed by requests for help with rent or mortgage payments, utilities, and other living expenses. This has put an unprecedented strain on our local non-profits. Therefore, basic needs such as food, housing, and living expenses were top priorities with this emergency funding. As a result, 51% of the grants awarded will support organizations working on the front line of addressing food insecurity.

Seventy three members and two corporate sponsors, Wicked Weed and Walnut Cove Realty, generously donated a total of $107,000 to the Coronavirus Emergency Grant Fund. We used $50,000 from member dues and previous donations to seed the fund, enabling us to quickly deliver a total of $157,000 to our community in need.

In order to expedite the grant process, only our 2019 grant recipients that were already set up to aggressively deal with these issues were invited to apply for an emergency grant. Those institutions that receive a grant from our emergency fund will still be able to apply for a grant in the fall. We received a total of $240,525 in grant requests. Consequently, we were not able to fund all the grant requests.

Thank you to the WCMA Grant Committee that quickly convened and managed adeptly through this new grant program. The Grant Committee members are: Bill Dockendorf, Rick Guthy, Clare Haislip, Sandi Heckman, Susan Heinemann (Vice Chair), Sunny Mathews, Rudy Nessel, Brian O’Lear, Sierra Paturalski, and Valerie Singer (Chair). Bob May, former chair of the committee, also helped in the process.
