What is WCMA?

The Walnut Cove Members Association, or WCMA, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps residents at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove donate time and money to our Western North Carolina community. Over the last 19 years, we have contributed millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours to help the most vulnerable in our community.

What makes WCMA different?

• We are local.  Our grants are only used to support needs of WNC residents; no funds go to out-of-area headquarters or operations.

• We are efficient. Because all WCMA operations are done by volunteers, we can give more to support local needs. We give over 90% of the funds we raise to local nonprofits each year.

• We are involved.  In addition to the money we raise, our Members volunteer their time and energy to support every one of our grantee nonprofits. In fact, each of our grants must be sponsored by a WCMA Member who volunteers at that nonprofit. Their intimate knowledge of that nonprofit’s mission and needs helps inform our grant-making decisions.

• We are good stewards of donations. Most of our Members are recent residents in Western North Carolina and only starting to learn about our community. Our volunteers spend hundreds of hours each year researching and prioritizing grant proposals from local nonprofits so our Members can trust our decisions. We also survey our Members each year to ensure we allocate our grants in accordance consistently with our Members’ priorities.

Our work is serious, but we also have fun! Throughout the year, our Members gather socially to connect with each other and explore our local communities, solidifying a sense of fellowship at Walnut Cove and offering our Members a welcoming introduction to our wonderful mountain community. (To maximize our charitable footprint, we do not use Member donations or dues to fund our events.)
