Our Story

We were founded in 2007, when a group of men led by Kevin O’Connor got together to donate $5,600 to six local nonprofits. The next year, that group, together a new parallel women’s group led by Janet Whitworth, donated $15,500 to nine local nonprofits. The two groups also began the tradition of Members’ volunteering their time and holding events to foster engagement with our local community. In 2010, the two groups merged and were renamed as the Walnut Cove Members Association. In 2012, we formalized our structure and became a 501(c)(3) organization.

We are proud of the results since then: dramatic expansions of our Membership, our donations and our hours volunteered. By 2025, we grew our Membership almost tenfold to over 500, while increasing our charitable donations over 100 times to a record $715,250. Since our inception, we have donated over $4.8 million and our Members have provided thousands of volunteer hours to support over 110 local charities.
